Finding Calm in the Storm - August Newsletter
This morning it was pouring down rain and I had to cross a puddle-ridden parking lot in sandals to get to my car. As I finally made it to my car and closed the door, the sound of the rain dampened and my coffee cup was waiting for me. Suddenly, in the midst of the storm I felt a sense of calm.
I believe it is safe to say that our world is in the midst of a storm. Finding a sense of calm can be challenging. Rarely, is it as easy as closing the door and drinking a cup of coffee.
Last month at one of our mobile food runs, I met a woman in the midst of a storm. She was a single mom with 3 kids, a full-time job and no child-support. Getting to a food pantry was proving almost impossible from her rural community. Often times she would show up late due to work and be turned away because there would no longer be food available. Discovering Catholic Charities Mobile Food Program was the calm in her storm. The food came to her neighborhood and she was registered, so even if she showed up at the last second, there would be food for her and her children.
What a wonderful reminder that no matter what personal storm we are in the midst of, we have the power to be the calm in someone else's storm. Psalm 107:29 says "He made the storm be still and the waves of the sea were hushed." How easy is it to forget, WE are the tools Jesus uses to still the storm. Catholic Charities is privileged to be a tool, but we only can be there for people because of YOU!
