People Who Need Food Have Pets That Need Food Too!

Back in 2005, a generous donor reached out to the Decatur Catholic Charities Food Pantry, wanting to help those in need in a unique way. She asked if there was a need among pantry clients for pet food. Since approximately 66% of households have pets, our answer was, “yes, we would be delighted to accept your donation!”

This timely inquiry came shortly after a client called to ask about baby food. When asked how old the baby was, the client admitted it was actually for her dog, as she did not have enough money to feed them both. Right on time, her donation met an essential need, and she has been donating ever since! At first she donated pet food a few times a year. Over the past ten years, she has made monthly contributions to the pantry, ensuring pets in need in and around Decatur don’t go hungry.

“Our generous donor is an amazing person with a kind soul. She is a true friend of all animals and her generosity has benefited our pantry clients and their beloved pets for the past 17 years. It is so heartwarming to see how grateful our pantry clients are when they receive pet food—for many, their pet is their only family, providing comfort and companionship during difficult times. We thank our generous donor for the thousands of pounds of pet food you have donated over the years to help our clients and their cherished pets.” — Robin Murray, Community Services Supervisor.

Our generous donor just recently dropped off her 194th donation. Her hope is that she will inspire others to join her in her mission, ensuring hungry people that receive food assistance also receive food for their pets across the diocese.
